Pirate Soccer Hosts Benefit Run
in Honor of One of their Own
In November of 2010, Charlestown High School Boys Soccer player Lucas
Taylor was diagnosed with Leukemia. In an effort to raise money for
the Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS), his team mates on the Charlestown High
School soccer team have invited the Jeffersonville team to join them in
running a half marathon in Lucas' honor. We are asking local business
leaders and community members to donate whatever they are able to this
cause. We hope to raise $2,500 for the LLS and have a strong number of
runners competing. The run will begin at Charlestown High School on
Saturday, April 9th and finish 13.1 miles later at Jeffersonville High
School. Runners are encouraged to run the full 13.1 miles solo;
however, there is an option to team up with a partner and split the
distance. If you are interested in running or making a donation,
please contact Coach Andrew Smith at Charlestown High School at your
earliest convenience; registration to run is FREE. Coach Smith can be
reached at the high school or by email at
AnSmith@gcs.k12.in.us.

Pirates Versus Mustangs: More Than Just a Rivalry Chapter this
Year
The
Charlestown Pirate Boys Basketball team
will open their 2010-11 season this Tuesday evening in their new Sports
Arena, beginning at 6:00 pm. The evening promises to be historic on many
levels; including another chapter in the long boys basketball rivalry
between the neighbor high schools. The Sports Arena gates will open at 5:15
pm on Wednesday in advance of the 6:00 pm Junior Varsity tip; the Varsity
contest between the Pirates and Mustangs will begin shortly after the
conclusion of the Junior Varsity contest. One of the most memorable moments
of the evening will certainly be just before the Varsity game tip; the first
boys basketball tip-off in the new Sports Arena. The Pirate Basketball
Program and Pirate Pride Booster Club have planned a ceremonial opening
tip-off as part of christening the new Pirate's ship. The new Sports Arena
is part of a newly dedicated 40 million dollar high school facility; which
replaced the former fifty year home of the Pirates, Bill Dunn Sports Arena.
Chuck Ledbetter, Sr., won the honors of performing the opening tip-off
during Pirate Pride's annual All-Sport Banquet and Auction, this past
April. Mr. Ledbetter in turn spear-headed a effort to involve former Pirate
boy's basketball coach John Wood, in Tuesday's opening ceremonies .
Coach Wood will help christen the new Pirate hardwood by
performing Tuesday's opening ceremonial tip-off; marking the first boys
varsity basketball game in the new CHS Sports Arena. Over thirty former
basketball players, cross-country, track, and managers of Coach Wood;
spanning from 1955 through 1961, and 1975 through 1977, will be on hand to
watch their former coach do the honors. Coach
Wood was the first boys varsity basketball head coach to mentor a Pirate
team in 1955, when the then 'new CHS gymnasium' was opened. The same gym
was then named in honor of Charlestown Pirate Coach Bill Dunn, in 1987; and
used as the home of the Pirates until its demolition this year. Coach
Wood's coaching career spans twenty-two years and four
schools; including 139 wins and 63 losses at Charlestown, making him
currently the "Winningest" Charlestown boys varsity basketball coach.
Overall, Wood's coaching years have produced a total of 283 wins, and five
Sectional Tournament Championships, two of those at Charlestown in 1975 and
1976. Tuesday's gate admission is $5.00; and includes halftime Pirate Pride
Saturday Youth Basketball League exhibitions, and the start of at least
another fifty years of Pirate Basketball history. The house expects to be
packed Tuesday evening, so arrive early to find your favorite spot in the
new Sports Arena. If you absolutely can't make it to the game, Pirate Pride
Sports Broadcasting will bring it to you live from
www.CharlestownPiratePride.com, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Terrell Approved as New Lady Pirate Head Coach
Lady
Pirate Basketball has a new head coach, as Sam Terrell was
officially approved by the Greater Clark School Board on Tuesday evening in
a special session. Terrell takes over the head coaching duties of the CHS
Girl’s Basketball program; replacing Tony Hall, who retired this past March
after thirteen seasons as the girls basketball head skipper. Terrell, who
is currently completing a Masters degree through Ball State, will also teach
special education at Charlestown High School. Terrell, 38, comes to the
Lady Pirate program from Castle High School (southwestern Indiana); where he
spent five years as a varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach of
girls basketball. Terrell also taught special education while at Castle,
and has coached basketball, track and cross country in several capacities at
both the middle school and high school levels since 1998. When asked what
attracted him to the Charlestown coaching vacancy, Terrell commented that he
is ready to lead a girls basketball program as its head coach; and expressed
that the size of the Charlestown school and community makes him and his wife
feel right at home. Coach Terrell and his wife both grew up and graduated
high school in similar sized communities of western Indiana. Coach Terrell
stated that Lady Pirate Basketball has a great tradition that he can’t wait
to continue, build on, and take to the next level as State Champions.
Terrell stated, “its more than just basketball, its developing a program
that is a family, active in the community and has team spirit. Everything
else, including winning, falls into place once you have those solid roots.”
Coach Terrell commented that he “wants Charlestown to know he and his family
are already dedicated to the community and program; that it’s not about
taking a resume step, but building a home and future they have desired for a
long time.” Charlestown HS Principal Keith Hedges expressed excitement of
finally moving forward on this position and stated;
“Trying to replace such a successful coach as Tony Hall was a definite
challenge and turned out to be a long and tedious process. The selection
committee unanimously chose Coach Terrell and we are very excited that he
has chosen to join the faculty at Charlestown High School. We feel Coach
Terrell has the necessary talents to continue the Lady Pirate Basketball
tradition and we feel confident that he will achieve great things for the
program.” Coach Terrell and his family, including two elementary age
children, now look forward to settling into Charlestown and getting
preparations underway for the rapidly approaching school year and girls
basketball season.

Coyne and Rhodes Lift
Pirates Over #6 Rebels of South Central
Pirate
Baseball hosted the Class 1A #6 South Central Rebels Friday night
at the Charlestown Little League Park. The contest marked the third
year in a row the Rebels have tangled with the Pirates while ranked in
Indiana Class 1A standings. Like the prior two years, the Pirates (6-4
/ 1-1 MSC) managed to produce the offense needed to pull out a win over a
recently successful program. Charlestown's Tyler Rhodes got the
win on the mound in impressive and commanding fashion, holding a normally
high producing offensive squad to just four hits on the evening. The
Pirates finished with three runs on three hits, including a homer by Junior
Steven Coyne
to lift the Pirates to victory, 3 to 1. "Tyler
Rhodes threw an exceptional game tonight! He had great command of his
pitches and went right at their hitters. Overall, it was just a real good
effort tonight! Steven Coyne did a great job of sparking our offense when
we needed it as well. He really took advantage of his opportunity and came
up big for us tonight!", commented Coach Romans after the victory.
The Cougars of North Harrison
visit the Pirates Monday for an important Mid-Southern Conference clash at
the Charlestown Little League Park, first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Pirate baseball
home games will be played at the Charlestown Little League complex due to
the new high school construction. For more information about Pirate

diamond running Thursday night, hosting the Warriorettes in Mid-Southern
Conference play at the Charlestown Little League Park. Freshman

The Lady Pirates were led by Junior Tyler Brafford's perfect 3 for 3
at the plate, including two RBI's. Junior Kelsie Houchens' 2
for 3 hitting and Senior McKinnah Bussey's 2 for 4 hitting, both
including doubles to the outfield, rounded out a very balanced effort by the
Lady Pirates. "I was glad to play deep into the roster tonight, would
have liked to gone deeper, earlier but we didn't get there. Overall,
I'm pleased with a solid conference win", commented Head Coach Kevin Zollman
at the conclusion of the contest. The Lady Pirates (4-3 & 2-2 MSC)
return to action Friday night, as they travel to Perry Central for a Varsity

at the Charlestown Little League Park. The contest was the
Mid-Southern Conference season opener for both squads. Charlestown

School is turning another page in its history books, as tonight the last
basketball game will be played in the facility's 55 year old gymnasium,
bearing the name of former Pirate boys basketball coach William "Bill" Dunn
since January 10, 1987. The Bill Dunn Sports Arena, as well as
the gym itself, holds more memories and traditions in CHS athletics than
anyone could ever begin to record. It is with great bitter-sweet
emotion that Pirate fans bid farewell to their long time home of basketball,
wrestling, and volleyball tonight, as our Pirates take its floor for
competition for the final time against the Floyd Central Highlanders.
Tonight's game concludes home basketball competition in Dunn Arena; as early
this coming summer it will be torn down to make room for the completion of
the remainder of the new Charlestown High School facility, including a
3,000+ seat main arena and adjacent double-auxiliary gymnasium. The
new basketball arena, planned to be called "The Pit" based on its design, is
planned to be open for graduation this June and become the new home of
decades of new traditions and memories of Pirate and Lady Pirate
competition. Tonight's final home contest will coincide with Senior
Night festivities of the 2009-10 team while also extending an invitation to
all former Pirate basketball players in conjunction with our Farewell to
Dunn Arena. The JV game will tip at 6pm followed by the final varsity
match-up versus Floyd Central at approximately 7:15 pm. Pirate
fans, don't miss your final opportunity tonight to re-live your Dunn Arena
memories and take part in its farewell ceremonies.

game from CHS and NWHS Basketball Players or Cheerleaders, for only $1.00
each. When entering Dunn Arena game-night, Friday, January 22nd, also

designed and sold with all proceeds also going to the American Cancer
Society. Pirate parent Linda Wakefield will also have "Hope Love Faith Cure" multi-colored blue, white and black wristbands on sell for only $1.00, also in
support of Coaches vs. Cancer fund-raising efforts. Pirate
Cheerleaders will also be walking the stands collecting change during
time-outs and halftime as part of the same fund raising efforts.

Pirates Host the Braves in the Football Sectional this Friday!
The Pirate Football Team (7 - 2), 2009 Mid-Southern Conference
Champions for the third consecutive year, suffered a disappointing setback
at Lawrenceburg last Friday to end an otherwise very successful regular
season. Lawrenceburg prevailed on a cold and rainy night 20-14.
The Pirates scored the first points of the game in the second when Senior
Michael Baines carried the ball 93 yards from the line of scrimmage to
score and give the Pirates a 6 - 0 lead. The Pirates scored again in
the fourth when Freshman QB Gage Brafford connected in the air with
Senior Jordan Williams for a 50 yard touchdown strike.
Senior Michael Baines added a two point conversion run to reduce the
Pirates deficit to six; 20 - 14, with a little more than four minutes
remaining. The Pirates however were unable to score again and dropped
the contest with eyes now set on the state tournament. Pirate Pride
Sports Broadcasting named Senior Michael
Baines the Tumbletown Offensive Player of the Game while
naming Junior Jake Dent, who finished the game with a total of
sixteen tackles, the Tumbletown Defensive Player
of the Game.

Sectional Championship since 1996, in one of the toughest sectional brackets
in the state. The Pirates have the drive and talent, the final
ingredient is the continued support of the community and all Pirate fans
cheering them on in the Bone Yard this Friday night.

Pirates Secure Third Straight MSC Football Title!
The Pirate Football Team (6 - 1 & 5 - 0 MSC) secured at least a share
of their third consecutive Mid-Southern Conference Championship by
outlasting Salem on Homecoming & Senior Night Friday. The Lions (4 - 3
& 3 - 2 MSC) held the Pirates to 165 yards of total offense and dominated
the time of possession but failed to score offensively against the Pirate's
defense. After a scoreless first half, which included a 31 yard missed
Salem field goal, the Pirates scored on their first possession of the second
half, when Senior Michael Baines capped a four play, 36 yard drive
with a 22 yard touchdown run. The extra point try was blocked keeping
the score at 6 - 0 until the Pirates gave up a safety to improve field
possession with 2:21 left in the game. The Pirate defense smothered
the Lions' chances at a game winning scoring drive with solid defense
causing Salem to turn the ball over on downs without positive yardage to win
the game. Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting named Seniors Michael
Baines and Josh Graham Tumbletown Co-Offensive Players of the Game while
naming the entire Pirate Defensive Unit the Tumbletown Co-Defensive Players
of the Game, lead by Clay Daniel, Lucas Poteet and Eric Kruse.

Lady Pirate Soccer Drops Close Contest to CAI
The Lady
Pirates lost to Christian Academy 5-4 on the 29th of September. Starting
out scoring for the Pirates was sophomore captain, Emma Wesp with a
gorgeous shot in the corner of the net. Junior Amanda Lee, assisted
by Emma Wesp, scored next in a battle in the box with several CAI & CHS
players. The CAI Warriors marched down the field scoring 3 goals in 20
minutes. Charlestown did not give up, however. In the second half, after
scoring two more times, the Warriors seemed to be letting down. The Pirates
put two more in the net, one off of a penalty kick by Emma Wesp, and
another by sophomore Destini Martin. Sophomore Samantha Smith
had an excellent game, challenging the CAI players at midfield. Coach
Satkoski commented, "Even though we lost we finished strong. When you are
beginning team, attitude is everything. Despite our losses our team
continues to stick together." The Lady Pirates are now 1 - 8. They play
their last three regular season games at home, Silver Creek this Thursday at
6, Switzerland County this Saturday at 1 (senior day), and then North
Harrison next Tuesday at 6 with a boys game following at 7:45. For more

Lady
Pirate Soccer Wins Historical Home Opener
The Charlestown Lady
Pirates Soccer welcomed Christian Academy of Indiana for their first
ever home game last night. With all the excitement and nervousness in tow,
the Lady Pirates came out with their first win EVER, beating the Lady
Warriors 4 - 1!!! The first goal was scored on a penalty kick by sophomore
captain Emma Wesp. The second goal was a sly shot from the right
outside corner and absolutely beautiful, again by Emma Wesp. The
third goal was bagged in the left corner by junior Kira Polus. To
finish off a hat trick, Emma Wesp scored the fourth goal by putting
another one in the corner. The defense (Sophie Higazy, Tyelar Motsinger,
Natalie Kelly, Allyson Stenbro, Tara Miller, and Kimber Evans) had a
great game, fending off CAI's very speedy offense. Senior Rebekah Balch
also played extremely well as a utility player, playing every position but
goalie at some point during the game. The Lady Pirates would like to thank
the fans for the immense support & cheering. Although very excited about
the win, they head back to practice today to tweak a few areas in
preparation for the conference opener, which is next Tuesday at Corydon.

Pirates Make It Three-In-A-Row
Versus Braves!
Pirate Football traveled to Elm Street in Brownstown to open 2009 MSC
play against the rival Braves. Elm Street ended up being a nightmare
for the host team instead of the visitors, as the Pirates' defense dug in
and stopped the Braves' high-powered offense for a 35-14 victory. The
game was ended due to thunderstorms with 10:46 minutes left in the game. The game began with each team marching the field twice and scoring touchdowns,
including an 85 yard kick-off return by Senior Michael Baines and a

With the score tied at 14-14 starting the second quarter, the Pirates'
defense took control, and their offense kept on digging. The Pirates'
Aaron Daniel intercepted a Brave pass on the Braves' next drive then
countered with a six play 51 yard drive that ended with Michael Baines
rushing ten yards for another touchdown with 2:18 left in the first half
(21-14). The Pirates opened the second half with a twelve play 62 yard
drive that ended with an Aaron Daniel one yard run for a touchdown
with 5:42 left in the 3rd. The Braves fumbled the ball on their next
possession when the Pirates marched 72 yards in 10 plays ending with a
Ethan Bowen 21 yard touchdown run to make the score 35-14 in the middle
of the fourth quarter. Aaron Daniel was named the Tumbletown
Offensive Player of the game while Logan McCutchen was named
Tumbletown Defensive Player of the game by Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting.
