Pirate Football Youth Camp Very
Successful
The
2009 Charlestown High School Football Youth Camp
was recently held during the last week of July. The participants, in
two different age group camps, one for 1st through 4th graders and one for
5th through 8th graders, worked on the fundamentals of football.
Offensive, defensive and kicking basics were the focus while working on
specific football position skills. The camp was managed by
Charlestown
HS head football coach Jason Hawkins, with assistants Gary Woods,
Eric May, Drew Curry, Chris Brafford, Denny Van, David Daniel, as well as graduated members of the 10-1 2007 MSC Champion team.
"Camp went really well with over 80 kids participating. We had to
spend a lot of time in the gym due to rain; but I feel the kids did a great
job, learned a lot and had fun at the same time. It's all about
building on the future and tradition of our program" commented Coach Hawkins
after the camp concluded. Eighty plus participants made the Pirates'
camp one of the largest in the area. For more information about

Pirate Damon Vest Signs with IU-Southeast Baseball
Pirate
Baseball graduate, 2009 MSC All-Conference, and 2009 Indiana Class 3A
All-State Baseball honoree Damon Vest recently signed with the
Indiana University-Southeast to play Grenadier baseball. During the
signing ceremony, Damon was joined by his parents, Jeff and Penny Vest, his
sister Nikki Vest, Charlestown Baseball Coach Ricky Romans, Charlestown High
School Athletic Director David Null, and IUS Assistant Baseball Coach Joe
Natterman. "I am very excited for Damon and this great opportunity
that he has to continue his education and baseball career. I'm sure
that he will excel in both the classroom and on the playing field. We
wish him nothing by the best as he continues at the next level", commented
Pirate Baseball Head Coach Ricky Romans after the signing ceremony.
IUS Coach Natterman added that "Damon is a great competitor and will be a
good leader by example. He is also very versatile and can play other
position beside catcher, which pigeon holes a lot of kids with lesser
agility and athleticism. He is an extremely hard worker and his work
ethic will make him a big part of our success in the future years as he
matures in this games. He knows it's not just your ability when you
come to college, but how you work that puts you over the top. He is
already an All-State caliber ballplayer, but the scary thing is he can get
much better. he will be a great addition to the Grenadier program."
Congratulations to Damon for reaching this accomplishment and representing
Pirate Nation so well, good luck at the college level.

Pirate Basketball Experiences Summertime Successes
High School sports in this day and age never
sleeps, here are some updates on Pirate Basketball accomplishments
thus far this off season. This week, a team of five Pirates played in
the Nolan Fieldhouse League and competed with a lot of toughness winning 3
consecutive games to win the league tournament. The team consisted of
juniors Steven Coyne, Josh King, and Kyle Hayes, sophomore
transfer Kendall Thompson and incoming freshmen Chris Braun.
The team defeated CAI in a lopsided victory, but then had to turn around and
play a very athletic and talented Rock Creek team in the semifinals.
During that game, the Pirates came back from two double figure deficits
including a 16 point deficit late in the second half to force overtime.
In overtime, the Pirates pulled out a 1 point victory on a terrific backdoor
feed from Josh King to Steven Coyne. In the finals, the Pirates also
gutted out another 1 point victory over South Central in overtime to win the
league tournament. "It was a gritty performance and it was great to see the
kids compete and play with a lot of resiliency. I was very pleased
with the way this group competed. They showed a lot of mental and physical
toughness and they played really well together", commented Pirate Head Coach
Sean Smith. Additionally, a few weeks ago in the Salem League
tournament, 3 of these Pirates, Steven Coyne, Kendall Thompson, and
Chris Braun; along with junior Timmy Hall, sophomore Brad
Baker and freshmen Aaron Daniel showed that same toughness nearly
making it to the finals of that tournament after upsetting #2 seeded Eastern
and then battling a physically tough West Washington team in the semifinals
only to the let the game get a way late. Despite being worn down from
playing for the fifth consecutive day, the kids battled and showed a lot of
mental toughness, gritty play and teamwork. "It was a long summer, but I
think that we found out a lot about our returning and incoming players",
concluded Coach Smith. For more information about Pirate Basketball,

Lady Devils Sink the Lady Pirates
The Lady
Pirate Softball team (10-7 / 5-3 MSC)
sailed into Jeffersonville Monday
night and was shanghaied in one fateful inning. The Lady Pirates got half of
their game total 4 hits in the top of the first inning but failed to score.
Then the Lady Red Devils countered with six hits of their own (including 3
doubles) and scored 4 runs as 10 batters came to the plate in the bottom of
the first inning. That one inning proved to be all Jeffersonville needed as
they won the contest 4 to 0. After that inning, the Lady Pirates contained
Jeffersonville to just 1 hit and allowed only 2 base runners but it was too
late to stop the wreck. The Lady Pirates got hits from the bats of Kelsie
Houchins (2), Amanda Miller, and Lyndsay Sprinkle.
In the JV contest, the two teams
completed the five inning game in a 5 to 5 tie. The Lady Pirates had the
hotter bats getting eight hits to just 2 for Jeffersonville. Gathering hits
for Charlestown were: Jena Sherrill (2 singles), Ashley Smothers
(a double and a single), and a single each for Tiffany Abbott, Shelby
Nash, Kelsie Houchins, and Rebecca Lawson.

Charlestown dropped an MSC game on the road by a final score of 8 to 5.

a big scoring 6th inning when the visitors took a short-lived 5 to 2 lead.

going 2 for 3. Tyler Brafford and Amanda Miller both went 2

by a score of 21 to 7. Ashley Smothers and Rebecca Lawson each
got a hit for the visitors and the pitchers for Brownstown walked a total of

in the University of Louisville girl’s basketball shoot-out this
summer June 12-14. The Lady Cards are coming off of an excellent year
finishing runner-up in the nation. All Charlestown High School girls
involved in the program are welcome to participate. Coach Hall said: “We
have been getting record numbers in the gym this spring for skill
development. The girls are all working hard to improve their dribbling and
shooting skills. We feel attending the U of L team camp will benefit all
players and be close enough for parents to attend games.”
The Lady
Pirates have also released their schedule for next year. Highlights are
dropping Rock Creek and only playing New Washington once in order to
participate in the prestigious Floyd Central Tournament which includes teams
from Indiana and Kentucky.

2-0 MSC)
hosted the Pacers of Switzerland County Saturday at the Charlestown Little League
Park for a double hitter, in more than one aspect. Pirate batsmen were

versus Charlestown's 7 on the day. Charlestown won both games, 14 - 12

"I thought we got a
little lazy after getting a big lead in the first game and it almost cost
us. The guys came out in the second game with a little more focus and swung
the bats better. We have to start playing more fundamentally sound defense
or it's going to catch up with us, but it's nice to get two victories today",

Lady Pirates shut out the Lady Lions in singles play to
squeeze the match victory at 3 - 2.
The win also gave Charlestown Tennis Coach Chris Ryan his 50th career
victory in seven years of Charlestown High School Girls Tennis.
The match results are as follows:
1S- Lynsey Peyton (C) d. Tonnie Terrell
5-7,6-0,6-2.
2S- Holly Duggins (C) d. Olivia Hazelip
6-1,6-1.
3S- Holly Jones (C) d. Dani Williams

Whitney Greene/Emily Combs 6-0,6-2.
2D- Wendy Fleenor/Teddi Mahuron (S) d. Cassie
Hesik/Stephanie Jones 6-7, 6-2,6-2.
"Our singles players competed today, when I
thought two doubles would be the key point. Lynsey and Holly Jones were able
to pull out wins, without feeling well or playing their best tennis. Lynsey
being able to dominate her match after dropping her first set was the
difference in the team score. Holly Duggins had a huge service day, and used
it as a big advantage in closing out her match", commented Coach Chris Ryan after the victory.

Laptop Initiative Funding for
CMS Laptops, Questioned
The school board is having a special meeting on Monday (March 16th,
2009) at the administration building immediately following their
executive session at 5:00 pm. This meeting is concerning the expenditure
for the middle school laptops. There is a need to show support for
the laptops by having a full board room. All Pirates are encouraged to
attend this meeting and show your support. This is an investment in our
community and our kids not just laptops, and that includes including the
Middle School students in the project with the High School students.
There has been some concern by certain some board members over the expense
for laptops and has had many New Washington and Jeffersonville parents
questioning “Why Charlestown?”. Until they have seen the One to One
Initiative in progress, they apparently aren’t seeing the big picture and
the work that the Charlestown community has dedicated.
Please call or email anyone you know that is in support of the One-to-Once
Initiative to inform them of this meeting. You can also email the school
board members, Pirate emails made a huge impact during the initial vote.

Pirate Baseball Finalizes 09
Schedule, Opens with Michigan School
The Pirates Baseball Team
has finalized its 2009 Schedule and includes an exciting opening game to
begin the season.
Charlevoix High School, of Michigan, is
making a stop to play the Pirates on their way to Tennessee for their annual
Spring Break trip. The game will be both team's opening game for the
2009 season, and also will mark the first time the Pirates have played an
out of state team since the 2005 season (when traveled to Ballard HS (KY)
for the Ballard Invitational). Coach Ricky Romans comments, "We
are eager to get things going this season. After finishing up last
season with a disappointing ending, the guys are ready to hit the ground
running in 09." The Pirates return many of the same faces from a year
ago, including 11 that have experienced Varsity action. "As with any
program, pitching will be the key. We will led by Senior Cameron
Metzger and Junior Bryan Williams; and will need contributions
from some of our young guys as well." Offensively, the Pirates will
miss the production and overall leadership of graduate All-State Clayton
Merschbrock, but will have many guys that have the experience to fill
his shoes. "Leading that charge should be Cameron Metzger, followed by
fellow Seniors Matt Wyatt, Damon Vest, Joel Rodriguez, and Chad
Brady, said Coach Coach Romans. Overall, it will be another
challenging season in the Mid-Southern Conference. Annual out of
conference games against New Albany, Providence, and Madison will provide
plenty of tests for the team in preparation of a successful post-season.
Coach Romans said, "If we come ready to work everyday and focus on improving
throughout the season, we should be primed for another winning season and an
opportunity to make some noise in the Conference and Sectional." The
complete schedule, including a printable version is available from the
Pirate Baseball Sports Page. Catch

Steven Coyne Named to Holiday
Tourney All-Tournament Team
Even though the Pirate
Basketball Team
was unable to successfully
defend it's 2007 Holiday Tournament crown, Sophomore Guard Steven Coyne
had a coming to varsity basketball life of sorts during this year's Silver
Creek Holiday Tournament. Coyne took advantage of extra playing time
in game one of the tournament versus Silver Creek, scoring 16 points and
making an impact on defense. Coach Smith rewarded Coyne the following
night in game two versus Clarksville; where Coyne entered the varsity
starting line-up and contributed another outstanding performance including 9
points. The Pirates suffered losses in both contests but showed more
improvements in various of areas of the game, and by several players.
As a result of Coyne's tournament performances, he was named by participant
school coaches to the 48th Annual Silver Creek
Holiday Tourney All-Tournament Team (the only Pirate to be named

Lady Pirates Defeat Corydon,
improve to 2-0
After opening the season with
a home win over Crawford County the Lady Pirate traveled to Corydon last
Friday night and came home with a 32-29 victory.
The Lady Pirates (2-0) after
falling behind 5-4 took a 6-5 lead and never trailed again.
The Lady Pirates again played
great team defense. Juniors Amanda Miller had 7 steals and Morgan Allen had
6 rebounds. The Lady Pirates out rebounded the taller Lady Panthers 21-19.
Miller lead the team in scoring
with 13 points on 6-7 shooting. Also scoring were Alicia Zollman 8, Cara
Rhoten 5, Morgan Allen 4, and Chelsea Johns 2.
The Lady Pirates will face the

rivalries in Clark County. The Lady Pirates are leading the rivalry
series, 20 games to 15; but have split their last six meetings (3 - 3) with
the Lady Mustangs. The series dates
back to the 1980-81 season, when the Lady Mustangs won the first seven of
ten meetings between the two programs.

Pirate fans won't want to miss, while supporting the current squad's
successful start to the 2008-2009 season. Pirate Pride Sports
Broadcasting will cover the game live via streaming audio broadcast on the
internet, beginning at 7:15 p.m. from

11/18/08:
Lady Pirates are Victorious in
Season Opener:
After finally a chance to
see your team in action against someone other than itself, what Charlestown
coach Tony Hall saw on Saturday was pleasing for the most part, as the
Pirates turned back Crawford County 62-58 at the Bill Dunn Sports Arena.
Charlestown (1-0)
showed a bit of everything. They opened a large lead, let that slip away and
then came back with timely free-throw shooting and defense.
“We didn't win this
game with any big offensive flurry at the end,” Hall said. “We won it with
defense and it takes guts to play defense. We had a couple of girls,
Brittany Bennison and Morgan Allen, really show some guts down the stretch
tonight.”
After leading by as
many as 15 points in the first half and by seven, 36-29, at halftime,
Charlestown trailed 52-45 after Crawford County’s Chelsea Benham drilled a
3-pointer with 5:10 left.
Charlestown then
went on a 9-0 run, tying the game at 52 when Amanda Miller hit one of two
free throws, then taking the lead when Miller scored after the Pirates
controlled the rebound.
Shauncae Bigham of
the Wolfpack and Chelsea Johns then traded baskets before Kim Holzbog hit
one of two at the line to pull the Wolfpack to within one at 56-55 with 1:27
left. Crawford then sent the Pirates to the line, a strategy that backfired
when they couldn't convert at the offensive end.
Trailing 60-55,
Crawford had one last gasp, as Chelsea Jellison hit a 3 with nine seconds
left. But Miller answered with two free throws to put the game out of reach
and give her a game-high 29 points.
“Amanda has a lot of
weight on her shoulders this season and she answered the first bell with 29
points,” Hall said. “We put the ball in her hands as much as possible. She
also had nine assists for us.”
Hall acknowledged
that his team has a lot of things to work on, such as 29 turnovers, but was
pleased with the clutch foul shooting down the stretch, something that
hasn't been a strength of past Pirate teams.
“You take a player
like Chelsea Johns, she's been in our program for four years,” Hall said.
“She hit two big free throws down the stretch for us tonight. She's never
been in that situation before, but she's practiced it many times and it paid
off tonight.”
Benham and Bigham
led Crawford Co. with 15 points apiece. Jellison added 11 points.
Charlestown will
open its Mid-Southern Conference slate next Friday with a trip to Corydon.
“We've got a week to get
ready,” Hall said. “We're pleased with the win tonight, but we know we have
some things to work on. The girls were talking about that after the game.
That's encouraging. Corydon is a very difficult place to play.” |
