08/27/10:
Pirate JV Soccer is Victorious versus the Pioneers
Pirate Soccer
hosted Providence this past Wednesday at Dutch Reis Field, for a
JV showdown. The Pirates started the contest experimenting with a new
lineup, and quickly paid the price as Providence jumped on us within the
first two minutes scoring the first goal of the game on a run out play the
brought our goal keeper out of the net where he was too easily beaten.
After twenty minutes of play, and the score still 1-0 in favor of
Providence, we made the necessary adjustments to get back into our more
familiar formation. Within a handful of plays, Doug Roskowski was
able to get the ball out into the open field for a beautiful cross in to
Brandon Lyons who tapped the ball into the net for his first goal of the
season. Now with the score tied at 1-1, Charlestown was able to settle into
their routine of playing a more aggressive attacking defense. Before the
first half had ended Roskowski was able to find the net for a goal of
his own, taking Charlestown into the break up 2-1.
The second half was filled with tons of shots on goal by the Pirates, but
none were quite able to make it into the net until with just over 3 1/2
minutes remaining in the game, Doug Roskowski was able to bury his
tenth goal of the season and second of the game. Having all but sealed the
victory with some stellar goal keeping by Cody Brinck, the Pirates
were able to give additional playing time to younger players including first
time player and back up goal keeper Chris Peveler who made several
saves including a phenomenal sliding tackle at the top of the box literally
snatching the ball off the Providence attackers feet.
Pirate Soccer returns to the field on Saturday (August 28th) at home,
hosting the Charlestown Invitational Tournament, beginning at 10:00 am.
There will be four games played in total on Saturday with guest teams Salem,
North Harrison and River City Home School Union completing the bracket.
Come out and support the boys soccer team as they attempt to avenge last
seasons loss to Salem for the trophy. |

Pirate Soccer Dominates the Host Hornets 9-3, in Season Opener
Charlestown Pirate
Soccer Senior Team Captain Doug Roskowski opened the scoring in
the first half, Tuesday versus host Henryville, by driving down the right
side unassisted from the flank twice. Junior Hunter Hooker
attacked from the defensive line making a beautiful assist to Roskowski
later in the first half. Sophomore Cesar Hernandez played a
stellar cross from the left flank that should have went in, but bounced off
the goal and found Roskowski waiting for the goal, who finished the
game with 5 goals. Senior Team Captain Gumaro Carrillo scored
from the defensive line midway through the second half for his first goal of
the season; Carrillo followed his first goal up a few minutes later
with a shot on goal that deflected off a Henryville defender and into the
goal for his second score.

Hunter Hooker
scored a header off a corner kick from Roskowski late in the second
half to make the score 8-2 Senior "Junior" Rodriguez scored his first
career goal assisted by Carrillo to end the scoring at 9-3.
Junior Cody Brinck managed to reel in 5 saves in the goal while only
giving up 2 goals to Henryville.
Sophomore Chris
Peveler, playing in his first ever soccer match, managed a save of his
own as well as forcing another shot to travel high and wide of the goal as
he attacked the on-coming forward from Henryville.
"I am proud of the
performance of our younger players tonight, they really stepped up and
proved that they were reliable enough to earn some playing time. We have
several players who are new to the game and others who are just very
inexperienced, they have learned a lot over the past few weeks and showed
tonight that they are able to execute in a game situation. Our senior
leadership of Doug Roskowski and Gumaro Carrillo really took
control of the attack for us on the right side while freshman Rodrigo
Martinez put on a show in the midfield as he seemingly got his foot on
nearly every ball that was played. We still have a lot of work to do through
our midfield play and there are some significant improvements that we still
need to make on our defense but I am confident that this group of boys will
be able to fix many of these shortcomings in the weeks to follow", commented
Pirate Head Coach Andrew Smith.
The Pirate's next game will be hosting conference foe Corydon Central,
Thursday, August 19th, on Dutch Reis Field. The match begins at
6:00pm. |
