Lady Pirate Softball Wins Host Invitational on Senior Day

Brown County takes runner up, and Austin 3rd over Crothersville

Game one of the Charlestown Invitational Saturday morning saw the Lady Pirate Softball team (15-6) come out full speed and never let off the gas. In the first inning Sophomore Alyssa Price doubled with two outs and then Senior Tyler Brafford delivered a blast to left field that cleared the wall for her first homerun of the season. The second inning saw the Lady Pirates add four more runs to their total. The big hit of the inning was Senior Brittany Bennison's double to left that scored three.  The third inning was an inning that the Lady Pirates batted through their whole lineup. They scored five with Junior Shelby Nash laying down a RBI sacrifice bunt, Freshman Morgan Ashby had  an RBI single up the middle and Bennison again drilled a double to left that scored two. The fifth and final inning saw the Lady Pirates bat through the lineup again, this time scoring four more runs on five walks and another single by Ashby. Final 15-0 Lady Pirates, advancing them to the Championship Game versus Brown County; who defeated Austin 12-0 in Game #2 of the day.  Austin easily defeated Crothersville 14-4 in the Invitational Consolation Game.

The Lady Pirates began the Championship Game versus Brown County celebrating "Senior Day", honoring the team’s five graduating Seniors to be.  The scoring didn't come easy for the Lady Pirates versus the Eagles. In the third inning Sophomore Alli Webster hit a double down the left field line and after a walk to Senior Kelsie Houchens, Sophomore Alyssa Price hits a double of her own to score Webster to make the score 1-0. This run held up until the sixth which saw Brown County score an unearned run to knot the score at one. The seventh inning got started for the Lady Pirates with Price singling with no outs. Seniors Brittany Bennison and Jenah Sherrill both singled with one out to load the bases. A wild pitch by the Brown County pitcher allowed Freshman Lauren Crowe, who came in to run for Price, to score and end the game.  Webster over-matched the Brown County hitters all game, giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out five.  This was one of her best pitching performances of the season, and the Lady Pirate’s seventh consecutive win to end the regular season.  The Lady Pirates now set their sights on the Class 3A Sectional in North Harrison; where on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in Game #3 they challenge the host Lady Cougars for a rematch of an early season disappointment.  Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting will provide complete and live coverage of Lady Pirate Sectional play with full detail available at www.CharlestownPiratePride.com.

Lady Pirates Dominate Southwestern in Softball Action

The Lady Pirate Softball team (13-6) had won three games this week coming into the game Thursday night against the Southwestern Lady Rebels; and continued their good play and timely hitting for one more night. The Lady Pirates beat the Lady Rebels 6-1 to continue this week’s winning streak. The first inning Charlestown jumped out in front when Sophomore Alyssa Price singled to center with two out and Senior Tyler Brafford knocked her in with a double to dead left field, Lady Pirates up 1-0.  In the third Price again got things going for the Lady Pirates with a double to left center field.  Price scored on a sharp line drive single up the middle by Senior Jenah Sherrill, Lady Pirates up 2-0.  The third started with a leadoff single through the middle by Junior Shelby Nash. Nash scored on a Sophomore Alli Webster double to the left field wall to put the Lady Pirates up 3-0 after four innings.  In the fifth inning the Lady Pirates added a run to their total without a hit because of three errors by the Lady Rebels.  The sixth inning saw the Lady Pirates add two more runs when Webster singled and moved to third on two Lady Rebel throwing errors. She scored on an RBI bunt single by Senior Kelsie Houchens.  Price followed Houchens with her third hit of the contest but Houchens was gunned down at the plate which allowed Price to move to second.  Brafford, the next hitter, delivered one more time for the Lady Pirates.  She drilled an inside fastball to left for a double to score Price and put the home team up 6-0. I know you are wondering what the Lady Rebels were doing while your Lady Pirates were running the bases and scoring runs.  Well, they were trying to figure out how to get anything going against the dominating pitching of Webster.  Webster struck out 8 of the first 9 Lady Rebel hitters and collected 13 strikeouts for the game. Webster faced the minimum and had a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning before the Lady Rebels got their first hit and lone run on two hits.  The Lady Pirates are in action again on Saturday morning in the Charlestown Invitational at 10:00 on the Charlestown Little League. Come join the fun a watch the Lady Pirates try to continue their winning streak.  Lady Pirate Softball Sectional play begins Tuesday at North Harrison, Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting will cover every minute of the action if you absolutely can’t make it to the game.

Lady Pirates Roll Over Austin then Henryville

The Lady Pirate Softball team battled the cold, rain and the Austin Lady Eagles on Tuesday night in MSC softball action.  The weather was cold but not the Lady Pirates, as they finish MSC season with a 10-0 pounding of Austin.  The Lady Pirates (12-6) came out in the first inning scoring two runs on hits by Sophomore Alli Webster, who stole second, and then Sophomore Alyssa Price drove her in with a RBI single.  Junior Ashley Smothers knocked in Price with an RBI single later in the inning to put the good gals up 2-0.  In the second the Lady Pirates got three more runs on singles by Webster, Seniors Kelsie Houchens and Brittany Bennison to go up 5-0.  The third inning saw the Lady Pirates mark one more run on a Senior Courtney Miles double off the left field wall and an RBI ground out by Freshman Morgan Ashby.  Miles again got in the action in the fourth inning with a single to left that scored Bennison who walked.  The fifth and final inning saw Houchens, Senior Jenah Sherrill, Bennison and Sophomore Gracynn Jennings all collect singles adding three more runs to the Lady Pirate total.  Webster got the win on the mound giving up just three hits and striking out 8 while walking none.  The Lady Pirates came out with a purpose again on Wednesday night as well, hosting Henryville.  They played one of their best games of the season on Hazel Howard field at the Charlestown Little League by beating the Lady Hornets with a 16 hit attack that never let them in the game.  The hitting stars were Sophomore Alli Webster, Senior Brittany Bennison and Junior Ashley Smothers who all collected three hits each for the winners.  Seniors Tyler Brafford and Kelsie Houchens and Sophomore Alyssa Price added two hits each.  Price and Smothers both smacked doubles.  Brafford tallied four RBI’s, and Webster two RBI’s while Smothers and Junior Shelby Nash each added one RBI each on the evening.  The Lady Hornets were held under control by strong pitching from Webster who struck out seven and kept the visitors off balance all night.  She scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs in the seventh with the game well in hand.  Final score 10-2, Lady Pirates.

05/16/11:

Lady Pirate Softball Dominate the Red Devils, 11-1

The Lady Pirate Softball team traveled to Jeffersonville Monday night to battle the county rival Red Devils and battle they did.  The Lady Pirates (10-6) pounded out 13 hits and collected 11 runs while holding the Lady Red Devils to just one run on five hits.  The Lady Pirates came out in the first inning on a mission, Sophomore Alli Webster got things started on the right foot by lacing a triple down the left field line.  Senior Kelsie Houchens then laid down a beautiful bunt for a single.  Sophomore Alyssa Price with two on drove a ball into left field for a single that scored Webster. Houchens later scored on a fielder’s choice by Senior Jenah Sherrill.  With two out Senior Brittany Bennison hit a double to left center that scored Freshman Cassie Martin who was running for Sherrill and Bennison was followed by Junior Ashley Smothers who also delivered a double to left scoring Bennison to put the Lady Pirates up 4-0 after one inning.  In the second inning the Lady Pirates got back to the offense.  Junior Shelby Nash singled to right and Webster followed suit with a single to left.  With two on Houchens drove a ball over the center fielders head for a double scoring Nash. Price again came through with another single to left scoring Webster and Houchens putting the Lady Pirates up 7-0 after two.  The bats cooled until the seventh inning when Houchens led off with a single for her third hit of the game. Price reached base on a Red Devil error and Senior Tyler Brafford then hit and RBI single up the middle scoring Houchens. After two more Red Devil errors which allowed two more runs to score Sophomore Gracynn Jennings came through with a big RBI single to right that scored Martin who again ran for Sherrill.  This put the Lady Pirates up 11-1 and close out the game.

The Red Devil offense was held in control by Webster and a strong Lady Pirate defense.  Webster struck out 10 on the night while giving up just 5 hits and walking none while the Lady Pirates made all the plays behind her committing no errors for the game and giving them their first win over the Red Devils in over a decade.  The Lady Pirates travel to Austin on Tuesday for their final MSC game of the season.

05/12/11:

Webster Hurls No-Hitter:  Lady Pirates Down Eastern 2-0

The Lady Pirate Sophomore Pitcher Alli Webster threw her first career no-hitter Thursday night against Pekin Eastern.  Webster was in total control all night throwing only 15 balls in her 7 innings of work.  The only thing keeping her from a perfect game was a hit batter with two out in the fifth inning.  Webster struck out ten while walking none and needing only 77 pitches for the game.  Strong Lady Pirate defense helped solidify the no-hitter.  Shortstop Brittany Bennison made the defensive play of the game diving to her right, catching the ball, and throwing the runner out at first for the first out of the fifth inning.  The offense came through with 2 big runs for the Lady Pirates.  Senior Kelsie Houchens singled in the first and after stealing second base and scored on a RBI single by Sophomore Alyssa Price to put the Lady Pirates up 1-0.  Bennison came through again in the fifth inning, this time on offense as Bennison drilled a fastball over the left fielders head for a triple.  She then scored on a ground out by Houchens putting the Lady Pirates up 2-0 and that's all they needed as  Webster dominated the Eastern hitters all night.  Price lead the attack for the Lady Pirates going 2 for 3 on the night.

05/12/11:

Lady Pirate Draw Host Lady Cougars in Softball Sectional

The Lady Pirate Softball team will open their IHSAA Class 3A Softball Sectional play against the host Lady Cougars of North Harrison High School in Game #3.  The sectional draw for the statewide high school post season tournament was conducted early Thursday morning in Indianapolis.  The Softball Sectional will begin Monday, May 23rd and run through the Championship game on the evening of Saturday, May 28th, on the grounds of the North Harrison High School in Ramsey, Indiana.  The Lady Pirates (9-6 and 3-5 MSC) and Lady Cougars are conference foes and very familiar with each others strengths and weaknesses.  Earlier this season, the Lady Cougars stole a 6-3 victory while visiting Charlestown on April 12th; but the Lady Pirates are a different team, winning five of their past seven contests.  "Our ladies are hungry for a North Harrison rematch, so they don't mind starting the tournament challenging the home team", commented Head Coach Kevin Zollman, in his 10th year as the Lady Pirate Skipper.  The remaining Class 3A Sectional #30 match-ups include Silver Creek versus Crawford County in Game #1 and Salem versus Corydon in Game #2.  Mitchell drew the sectional bye and will play Game #4 versus the Game #1 winner.  "There's a lot of stiff competition in the lower half of the bracket, those winners (Games #2 & #3) should carry good momentum into the Championship Game", Coach Zollman added.  Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting and the Pirate Pride website will have full softball sectional coverage and information, including schedules, match-ups, results, directions and everything fans will need to follow our Lady Pirates through post season play!

Lady Pirate Softball Splits DH at Madison

The Lady Pirate Softball team went into Madison Saturday riding a four game winning streak which they hoped to continue, and continue it they did.  The Lady Pirates (8-5 & 2-4 MSC) came out in the first inning and put up three runs on the Lady Cubs.  Sophomore Alyssa Price singled following a sophomore Alli Webster walk and, after a fielders choice by Senior Tyler Brafford, Jenah Sherrill drove a 0-1 pitch into left center gap for a double scoring Price and Brafford.  Freshman Lauren Crowe came in to run for Sherrill and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Senior Brittany Bennison.  The Lady Pirates added one more run in the second, fourth and seventh to give them a total of six while Madison could only get manage an unearned run in the sixth giving the Lady Pirates a 6-1 win.  The Lady Pirates had 11 hits for the game and left 13 runners stranded in game one.  Sherrill was the hitting star going 4-4 with two doubles and two RBI.  Price and Webster also added two hits each for the winners.  Webster pitched a gem striking out 10 Lady Cubs while walking none and scattering five hits on just 79 pitches.

Game two against the Lady Cubs seemed like a repeat of game one.  In the third inning, with the score 0-0, Senior Kelsey Houchens walked with one out.  She scored one batter later on a line drive homerun to center field by Webster giving the Lady Pirates a 2-0 lead.  Price then delivered a double with bases empty and she scored on a double by the next hitter Tyler Brafford making it 3-0.  The score stayed there until the seventh when, in a pouring rain, the Lady Cubs put the only rally they had all day together. They scored four runs on the rain soaked Lady Pirates on three hits, two walks and one Lady Pirate error giving them the 4-3 win.  This was a hard loss for the Lady Pirates who had played so well all day ending their winning streak at five.  Another offensive leader besides Price, who had two doubles, and Webster, who hit her sixth homerun of the season, was Brafford who added two hits to the Lady Pirate total.  Webster got the loss from the mound but continued her good pitching, allowing only 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6 in the wet contest.

Lady Pirates Trounce Warriorettes, 11-3 in MSC Action

The Lady Pirate Softball team got well Thursday night in Scottsburg after a disappointing loss to North Harrison on Tuesday.  They took all their frustrations out on the Warriorettes who had no idea what was coming.  The Lady Pirates (4-2 & 1-2 MSC) beat Scottsburg 11-3 on a strong hitting and pitching performance.  The scoring for the Lady Pirates started in the top of the second when Senior Brittany Bennison singled and then scored on a long double by Senior Jenah Sherrill.  In the third inning Senior Tyler Brafford walked and was followed by a single from Sophomore Alyssa Price. Bennison then came up and rocked one off the left field wall for a double scoring both Brafford and Price to put the visitors up 3-0.  After holding Scottsburg again in their half of the third, the Lady Pirates were back at it in the fourth.  Sophomore Gracynn Jennings, who reached on an error, scored on a double by Senior Kelsie Houchens. Brafford  moved Houchens to third with a single to left field.
