Pirate Damon Vest Signs with IU-Southeast Baseball
Pirate
Baseball graduate, 2009 MSC All-Conference, and 2009 Indiana Class 3A
All-State Baseball honoree Damon Vest recently signed with the
Indiana University-Southeast to play Grenadier baseball. During the
signing ceremony, Damon was joined by his parents, Jeff and Penny Vest, his
sister Nikki Vest, Charlestown Baseball Coach Ricky Romans, Charlestown High
School Athletic Director David Null, and IUS Assistant Baseball Coach Joe
Natterman. "I am very excited for Damon and this great opportunity
that he has to continue his education and baseball career. I'm sure
that he will excel in both the classroom and on the playing field. We
wish him nothing by the best as he continues at the next level", commented
Pirate Baseball Head Coach Ricky Romans after the signing ceremony.
IUS Coach Natterman added that "Damon is a great competitor and will be a
good leader by example. He is also very versatile and can play other
position beside catcher, which pigeon holes a lot of kids with lesser
agility and athleticism. He is an extremely hard worker and his work
ethic will make him a big part of our success in the future years as he
matures in this games. He knows it's not just your ability when you
come to college, but how you work that puts you over the top. He is
already an All-State caliber ballplayer, but the scary thing is he can get
much better. he will be a great addition to the Grenadier program."
Congratulations to Damon for reaching this accomplishment and representing
Pirate Nation so well, good luck at the college level.

Pirates Keep the Ship Steady, Disappoint Cougars
The Charlestown Pirate
Baseball team (15-4 / 6-1 MSC) traveled to Ramsey, Indiana Monday
evening for a showdown with the North Harrison Cougars (7-7 / 2-3 MSC).
While in the hunt of their first conference title since 1987, every
conference game is critical and the one played Monday night against a
struggling 7-7 team was no exception. After a sluggish start, the
Pirates focused on the task and kept the ship up-right, denying the Cougars
an upset bid. Senior Damon Vest continued his batting
improvements by finishing with two doubles, while team mates Brady,
Williams and Rhodes also contributed doubles while at bat.
Junior Bryan Williams improved his mound record at 6 - 1 with the
win. The
Pirates have two remaining MSC games left, Thursday at home versus
Brownstown and Monday at Salem. "We started a little flat today but
regrouped and put a nice performance together. Bryan did a good job of
battling on the mound and our offense continued to come up big in clutch
situations. Overall, I'm proud of our effort, especially after the slow
start",
commented Head Coach Ricky Romans after the game.

Pirate Baseball Finalizes 09
Schedule, Opens with Michigan School
The Pirates Baseball Team
has finalized its 2009 Schedule and includes an opening exhibition game to
begin the season.
Charlevoix High School, of Michigan, is
making a stop to play the Pirates on their way to Tennessee for their annual
Spring Break trip. The game will be both team's opening game for the
2009 season, and also will mark the first time the Pirates have played an
out of state team since the 2005 season (when traveled to Ballard HS (KY)
for the Ballard Invitational). Coach Ricky Romans comments, "We
are eager to get things going this season. After finishing up last
season with a disappointing ending, the guys are ready to hit the ground
running in 09." The Pirates return many of the same faces from a year
ago, including 11 that have experienced Varsity action. "As with any
program, pitching will be the key. We will led by Senior Cameron
Metzger and Junior Bryan Williams; and will need contributions
from some of our young guys as well." Offensively, the Pirates will
miss the production and overall leadership of graduate All-State Clayton
Merschbrock, but will have many guys that have the experience to fill
his shoes. "Leading that charge should be Cameron Metzger, followed by
fellow Seniors Matt Wyatt, Damon Vest, Joel Rodriguez, and Chad
Brady, said Coach Coach Romans. Overall, it will be another
challenging season in the Mid-Southern Conference. Annual out of
conference games against New Albany, Providence, and Madison will provide
plenty of tests for the team in preparation of a successful post-season.
Coach Romans said, "If we come ready to work everyday and focus on improving
throughout the season, we should be primed for another winning season and an
opportunity to make some noise in the Conference and Sectional." The
complete schedule, including a printable version is available from the
Pirate Baseball Sports Page. Catch
